  • The last project we visited during this excursion, Overdiepse polder, is a bit harder to grasp. The farms have been relocated on large mounds, at the edge of the polder and connected to the improved dike. What remains is a vast, open agricultural landscape, with the ruins of the old pumping station as lonely landmark in the middle.
  • Landscape and architecture of the technical infrastructure in Noordwaard are connected in clever ways. The brickwork of the top part of this pumping station is reused from removed farms. The lower part is made of new, more water resistent bricks. The colour change indicates maximum expected water levels of floods. Electrical equipment, that must remain dry at all times, is located in the upper part. The height gave the opportunity to make a public elevated platform with 360 degree views of the surrounding landscape.
  • Already over a week ago the chair went on excursion. Theme was 'Room for the river', more specific the landscape architectural dimension of dike relocation projects. Here a nature stage in the 'dikke dijk' flood defense in Munnikenland, a resting point for cyclists and hikers shaped as a stair in the dike, to watch new nature in front.
  • This year there are several graduation labs in the Landscapearchitecture studio, all over the World. Parkstad Zuid-Limburg, Bosnia and Miami. This is the shared heritage lab dealing with environmental issues in Bandung, Indonesia with students Jui, Boomi and Nico as tutor.
